The work behind the hire

The search became clear before it became fast.

Brass Tracks organized the uncertainty, tested the assumptions, and gave the leadership team a smaller set of better-supported decisions.

01

The business risk

The company needed one person who could lead engineers and remain deep in the work across React, Python, PostgreSQL, AWS, REST APIs, and data pipelines. The role also owned code quality, technical design, mentoring, and delivery across two distinct product platforms.

02

What the market revealed

Many engineering leaders had moved too far from the code. Strong individual contributors often lacked the judgment to set standards, coach a team, and make decisions across competing product needs. The title looked familiar, but the combination was not.

03

The decision we clarified

The business needed a true player-coach, not a manager who delegated the hardest technical work and not a senior engineer waiting to become a leader. Hands-on credibility and the ability to raise the team around them carried equal weight.

04

How Brass Tracks moved

Brass Tracks screened for evidence of architecture and team leadership in the same career, then tested whether candidates could move between product requirements, system design, code review, mentoring, and live delivery.

The result

The hire is raising the engineering standard and driving an aggressive roadmap forward.

Mandate architecture

Why the market was narrow.

01 / Business capability

Added hands-on technical leadership to raise engineering standards and drive an aggressive roadmap forward.

02 / Rare intersection

Hands-on React and Python depth, architecture judgment, code-quality ownership, and credible player-coach leadership.

03 / Deciding evidence

A leader who could raise the team’s standard without stepping away from the hardest technical work.

The difficult search

Bring us the search that has resisted the obvious answers.

The mandate that combines too many things. The market that appears too narrow. The role other firms keep turning into the same predictable slate.
